MedImmune seeks license for 4-strain flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – In an effort to overcome the difficult problem of predicting which influenza B strain will circulate in any given season, MedImmune has filed for US approval of a quadrivalent (four-strain) flu vaccine containing two influenza B strains.

The idea of a quadrivalent flu vaccine has been discussed for several years, but MedImmune's application apparently is the first attempt to license such a vaccine in the United States.

Flu vaccine shipments start for US market

(CIDRAP News) – Companies that make flu vaccine for the US market announced that they have begun shipping their first doses for the 2011-12 flu season, according to statements from four of the five companies.

Swedish data strengthen case for vaccine-narcolepsy link

(CIDRAP News) – New data from Sweden today added more evidence of a link between a 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine and narcolepsy in children and adolescents, suggesting that those who were vaccinated had more than a sixfold increase in risk for the condition.

Federal review outlines new flu vaccine investments, challenges

(CIDRAP News) – The price-tag for federal investments in new flu vaccine technology has been difficult to get a handle on, but yesterday in a review for Congress the Government Accountability Office (GAO) put the number at $2.1 billion since fiscal year 2005.

ACIP likely to OK flu shots for egg-allergic patients

(CIDRAP News) – The federal government's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) yesterday approved a statement that says injected influenza vaccines are safe for people who have a mild egg allergy, provided they are observed afterward for any reactions, but the statement is not yet official policy.
