Dr. Duchin earned his MD from Rutgers Medical School after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia. His training specializes in infectious diseases and epidemiology, with a residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a fellowship in emergency medicine and general internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Washington. He furthered his training at the CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer and preventive medicine resident and subsequently worked for CDC as a medical epidemiologist in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention and the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination.
In 1998, Dr. Duchin became Chief of the Communicable Disease Epidemiology & Immunization Section for Public Health – Seattle; King County, WA, and in 2015 assumed the role of Health Officer, retiring in 2024. Dr. Duchin joined the faculty of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington in 1998 where he currently is an Emeritus Professor in Medicine.
A leading expert in infectious diseases and immunizations, Dr. Duchin has influenced local health policy and national public health strategies, especially during outbreaks. He has worked extensively in vaccine hesitancy, immunization delivery, and risk communication. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a critical role in shaping governmental responses and public health messaging.
Dr. Duchin has served on prestigious committees, including the CDC's Board of Scientific Counselors, the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC), and the National Academy of Medicine’s (NAM) Forum on Microbial Threats and Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, where he has held several leadership roles, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles.
