The Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC's) health ministry today reported three more Ebola cases in three different locations.
In its daily update, officials said the 3 new lab-confirmed cases are from Katwa, Komanda, and Mabalako, raising the overall total to 542 cases, including 494 confirmed and 48 classified as probable. Outbreak responders are still investigating 96 suspected Ebola cases.
Officials confirmed 18 new Ebola cases, including 9 deaths, in recent days.
The outbreak has now reached 521 cases and 306 deaths as responders grapple with multiple challenges.
Also, the NIAID has reached an agreement to license an experimental treatment.
A lead WHO official says the most recent wave of cases has proved especially challenging, with cases widely dispersed.
With 13 new illnesses in 3 days and 8 older ones just confirmed, the outbreak has now reached 498 cases.
Female patients represent 62% of cases, and children 14 years and under 24%—worrisome statistics.
Officials confirm 13 new cases, bringing the outbreak total to 471 cases and 273 deaths.
"We have to make sure pregnant women are on the agenda, so they will never again be left unprotected."
The WHO reports that cases dropped from 46 confirmed illnesses 2 weeks ago to 28 last week—and 43 health workers are now infected.
