(CIDRAP News) The foodborne disease surveillance system seems to be under siege. A nearly continuous series of large, multistate outbreaks of Salmonella have been associated with unexpected food vehicles over the past 3 years. Several of these investigations stretched on for weeks under the glare of increasing public anxiety over uncertain identification of the source.

(CIDRAP News) Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., today announced plans to introduce legislation designed to improve the nation's response to foodborne illness outbreaks by promoting use of some of the tools that helped Minnesota officials find the sources of two recent widespread Salmonella outbreaks.
(CIDRAP News) Federal health officials yesterday warned consumers not to eat raw alfalfa sprouts, including blends that contain the sprouts, until further notice, because the seeds used by growers around the country may be contaminated with Salmonella.
