Feb 1, 2010 (CIDRAP News) – Daniele Inc., the company whose sausage products have been linked to a widespread Salmonella outbreak, yesterday expanded its earlier product recall to include another 17,235 pounds of products that may be contaminated by black pepper.
The Rhode Island firm on Jan 22 recalled 1.24 million pounds of pepper-coated salami products. Black pepper used to coat the products was found to be contaminated with the strain of Salmonella Montevideo identified in an outbreak involving, at latest count, 203 cases in 42 states, according to federal and state health officials.
The latest recall involves bulk Calabrese sopressata products made after Nov 7, 2009, Daniele said in an e-mail announcement. The recall was expanded after the Illinois Department of Public Health reported finding Salmonella in an unopened salami product, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in a news release yesterday.
"The three products being recalled today may have been exposed to the same black pepper during production with the pepper-coated products recalled earlier," the Daniele announcement said.
"The pepper was imported from Vietnam and came from one of Daniele's spice distributors. Daniele has terminated its relationship with this distributor," the company said.
The company listed the products as:
- Calabrese sopressata flat bulk, 3 to 3.5 pounds, with sell-by dates of Dec 16 and 18, 2009
- Hot Calabrese sopressata flat bulk, 3 to 3.5 pounds,
- Boar's Head Hot sopressata Calabrese, produced on Nov 28 and Dec 9, 2009
The packages bear the establishment number "EST. 54" inside the USDA inspection mark, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said. The products were distributed to retail stores nationwide.
When available, a list of stores that received the products will be posted online by the FSIS. The agency has posted a list of the stores believed to have received products subject to the original recall.
The FSIS said further testing is under way at a state health department laboratory to determine if the product that triggered the expanded recall contained the outbreak strain of Salmonella.
In its latest update on the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today that 203 cases have been identified in 42 states. California leads the list of affected states, with 30 cases. Because the outbreak strain is a common one, the CDC said investigators may eventually determine that some of the 203 cases are not part of the outbreak, which began last July.
Among 151 case-patients for whom information was available, 40 were hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, the CDC said.
